We welcome any patient (with family member or other caregiver) who is visiting Cleveland for any medical appointments associated with an organ or bone marrow transplant. Those appointments could be for: Evaluation, Pre-transplant care, Organ transplant, Transplant recuperation, or Post-transplant care. Family members can stay at Transplant House even if the patient is hospitalized.
How to Inquire about a Room
Please call us at 216-938- 9553. You may also email us at firstname.lastname@example.org. Unlike a hotel, we cannot make reservations far in advance because many of our guests are not certain of their departure dates. Additional appointments are sometimes added to patients’ schedules and/or the patients’ discharge date changes. We will record your arrival date in Cleveland and your desire for a room, and do all we can to accommodate you. Making a “back up” hotel reservation can bring you peace of mind, and the reservation can then be cancelled once something is “firm” at Transplant House.
The House operates much like a bed & breakfast, in the sense that check-ins are done during the daylight hours. Though guests receive a caring welcome, there is no overnight staff, concierge, or porter. We ask all guests to arrive during the normal office hours. In special circumstances, check-in hours can be extended to 7:00 p.m., but arrangements must be made in advance by calling the office: 216-938-9553.
Transplant House of Cleveland occupies two buildings– a 16-unit row house-style apartment building, and a 9-unit three-story apartment building lovingly referred to as "the six-pack house". Our apartments are located in University Circle, within walking distance of University Hospitals and about 1 mile east of Cleveland Clinic. The first building is at the corner of Mayfield Road and Circle Drive, very near Little Italy, and the second is behind Hope Lodge on East 115th Street.
One apartment serves as common space, where we share meals (if desired), offer coffee and goodies, and provide washer and dryer for guests’ use. All other apartments are private for our guests and include bedroom, bathroom with tub and shower, wireless internet and cable TV, kitchen with oven, refrigerator, cookware, microwave, coffee maker, dishes and everything needed for you to be fully equipped for cooking. All apartments are furnished with everything needed for a comfortable stay, from linens to cleaning supplies. Six apartments are studios, which includes a full bed and a twin bed, but does not have a separate living room. Fifteen apartments are one-bedroom, and that includes both a double bed and a twin bed, with a separate living room. Three apartments are 2-bedroom units, offering a double bed and two twins and a separate living room.
One limitation of our building is the absence of an elevator. In our first building Guests must use 6 steps to get to our first floor apartments and 24 steps to get to the second floor. There is a landing in between the flights of stairs where guests who need a rest can sit briefly. In our second building Guest must climb 9 steps outside to reach the first floor, 3 steps to get to a chair lift that will take you to the second floor (without the chair lift it would be an additional 13 steps), and 16 additional steps to get to the third floor.
Parking & Transportation
Guests who have cars can park them with us, for no additional fee. Guests who are being seen at Cleveland Clinic can take the Clinic’s White Line Shuttle to the hospital by walking next door to Hope Lodge. The shuttle runs throughout the day with pick-ups every two hours, and can be called in between the regularly-scheduled times.
Transplant House is fortunate to be in the middle of a very walkable urban neighborhood, on the edge of the campus of Case Western Reserve University. Our guests enjoy walking up Mayfield Road into Little Italy where there are numerous Italian restaurants and several bakeries, along with art studios. In the other direction, our guests walk to “Uptown” which is the favorite of college students and faculty, with a grocery and a number of familiar restaurants (Chipotle, Panera, Jimmy John’s, Potbelly, and more) and our home-town favorite- Mitchell’s Ice Cream.
We ask our guests to contribute $50 per night for use of a studio, $60 per night for the use of a one-bedroom apartment, and $75 for a two-bedroom apartment. There is no tax on this contribution. We do all we can, in collaboration with the hospitals, to reduce this amount for long-term guests. Please encourage your friends to contribute to our Family Assistance Fund so we can make our home-away- from-home more affordable for all guests.
